Iran rout Costa Rica

Germany coach Christian Wueck today said there was intense pressure on his team from fans back home after the shock loss to Iran in the Federation Internationale de Football Association U-17 World Cup here.

Germany came close to restoring the lead toward the end of half-time when Elias Abouchabaka's left footed shot from outside the box was saved by Guinea's keeper Mohamed Camara.

The massive 4-0 loss against Iran in the last game had shattered the Germans' confidence.

Goals from a Jann-Fiete Arp, Nicolas Kuehn and Sahverdi Cetin were enough for the Germans to notch a tight win over the African side, who had equalised through right back Ibrahima Soumah midway through the first half. That was proof of how well their attacking players were getting closed down, with the other central midfielder Yannik Keitel also playing a containing role in the second half.

Guinea - a powder keg of superb individual ability married with inexcusable errors at clutch points in their first two games - promised to be an unpredictable team to face, though Thursday's results in Group B had meant Germany basically had to avoid defeat, and even if they had lost, they would have been assured of qualification for the round of 16 unless Costa Rica pulled off a win against table-toppers Iran in Goa.

"There are some days when nothing works out, so we knew we had to take something from this game, we knew we had to do something different", said Arp, the Hamburg striker in the Bundesliga.

Iran will definitely miss the services of Mohammad Ghobeishavi for their round of 16 clash as he received the second yellow card in the last three games, that hands him a one-match suspension.

Summary: That boils down to beating Costa Rica to guarantee topping the group."Goa is a good omen for us", the stoic Chamanian said.

Keen to top the group, Asian powerhouse Iran employed five defenders and kept the rival attackers at bay, while finding the back of the net on three occasions.

Wuck signed off by saying that the Round of 16 match against Colombia will be a hard one, the team will take rest and start the preparation for the match soon.

"It is their best performance so far and if they continue to perform in the same manner we have a great chance to reach the final", said Abbas Chamanian.

Asked about the conditions in Kochi, he said, "I think conditions in Kochi are better than Goa because it is not so hot and not so humid".

"Colombia is a very very good team. We were nervous in the first half and in that bargain we conceded two penalties, which costs us the match". My players played better here, and it is something I can't explain.
