New Orleans officer killed in shootout

A New Orleans Police Department officer was shot and killed early Friday morning.

It happened shortly after midnight, police say.

A New Orleans police officer was shot and killed early Friday morning. No other officers were wounded. Harrison said four officers were patrolling the area when they "saw something that aroused their suspicion", and caused them to exit a police vehicle.

"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", says Superintendent Michael Harrison.

One officer was struck and collapsed at the scene, while one or two officers returned fire, striking the suspect, according to Harrison. There was only one gunman, he said. The identities of the officer and suspect have not been released.

Police were evacuating residents from apartments near the scene as the situation developed.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the shooting occurred at about 12:14 a.m.

According to Harrison, four patrolling officers saw suspicious activity and got out of their units. Eventually, the suspect surrendered peacefully and was transported to a local hospital.
