The UAE will also stop issuing new visas or company licences to North Korean citizens, WAM said.

The fate of the thousands of North Korean laborers already in the UAE remains up in the air.

The US is seeking to rally the global community to sever ties with the North to further isolate the regime and force it to give up its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes.

Tensions over North Korea's weapons programme have soared in recent months, with Pyongyang launching a flurry of missiles and conducting its sixth and most powerful nuclear test last month.

The workers help North Korea avoid sanctions, and raise money for its nuclear programs.

"Very happy to hear that", the spokeswoman for the US State Department, Heather Nauert said during a press briefing.

Kuwait has North Korea's only embassy in the Gulf region.

Japan and South Korea, both neighbors of the rogue state, have also pressured Gulf countries to stop employing North Korean workers.

The move by the UAE comes after Kuwait, in September, told the North Korean ambassador there he had one month to vacate the country and stopped issuing visas to all North Koreans. "Visas to North Korean nationals will not be renewed", it said.

"Approximately 1,000 remain, but this number will decline rapidly as their employment contracts expire".
