'X-Men' Spinoff 'Gambit' Sets 2019 Release Date

Though Tatum had joined the X-men world a few years ago, his standalone project has been struggling to take off.

Whether the Gambit movie actually does get made and makes this release date is another story, though; a February 2019 release would put it almost two and a half years after its initial October 2016 projected release date.

Now, however, 20th Century Fox has finalized a release date for the film.

It's official: Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is taking the helm of the long-awaited Gambit movie.

Channing Tatum will star as Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit, the mutant who has the ability to convert the potential energy into kinetic energy often using energy-charged playing cards as projectiles.

Although he did not appear in the first three X-Men films, Gambit appeared on screen in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was portrayed by actor Taylor Kitsch.

It is no coincidence that they picked this date, either; they are very clearly hoping to emulate the branding of Deadpool, whose highly ironic Valentine's Day 2016 release date was hugely successful.

Gambit was first created for Marvel by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee in 1990. Gambit will most probably share its release date with the comedy film titled Isn't It Romantic, and Universal's untitled film.
