San Francisco 49ers Release Linebacker NaVorro Bowman

Teams tried, but ultimately, San Francisco ended up releasing the talented linebacker. Nothing materialized, leading to Bowman's release.

The last remaining vestige of the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl team could finally be on his way out of town.

"NaVorro gave his heart and soul to this team for the last eight years, and for that we are all extremely grateful", Lynch said in a statement.

"Thursday evening, (49ers head coach) Kyle (Shanahan) and I met with NaVorro, and from our conversation it became evident that going in different directions was best for both him and our team. We wish him and his family great success." .

Trevathan is now back but John Timu is injured, and the Bears certainly have an open opportunity for someone like Bowman to be able to step in and contribute.

Bowman (6-0, 242) was originally drafted by the 49ers in the third round (91st overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He was forced to sit through the entire 2014 season with ACL and MCL tears to his knee.

Bowman has posted 37 combined tackles, and one passes defensed in five games played for San Fransisco in 2017. He ranks 47th among linebackers in tackling efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus.

The problem with bringing in a player like Bowman is that he has suffered major injuries throughout his career.

Bowman made three-straight Pro Bowls with Fangio as his coach from 2011-2013 before a knee injury forced him to miss all of 2014, Fangio's previous year in San Francisco. But Brock Coyle, an undrafted core special teams player, had two tackles and a half sack in Browman's spot.

This is not the first time this year that Bowman's name had popped up regarding trade talk.

During the 49ers' run of three straight playoff appearances from 2011-13, Bowman was one of the NFL's best linebackers.

First-round rookie linebacker Reuben Foster is set to return to limited action against Washington Sunday after being sidelined with a high ankle sprain since the team's Week 1 matchup against the Panthers.

According to ESPN, Bowman has not been happy with his playing time so far this season. In 2018, that number increases to almost $12 million.
