Weekend Box Office: Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions Do It Again

Despite middling reviews, it surpassed the critically acclaimed "Blade Runner 2049".

Death is alive and well, at least in the movies, as Happy Death Day raked in an estimated $26.5 million at the box office over the first weekend.

What is more, the total was enough to scare audiences away from Blade Runner 2049, which lost more than half of its receipts from its already tepid opening weekend and made only $15.1 million, for a domestic total of about $60 million.

A horror spin on "Groundhog Day", "Happy Death Day" centers on Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) as a woman who wakes up to the same day - her birthday - every day, and is murdered every time. That gives the film, an LGBT romance directed by Angela Robinson, the 18th worst debut for a film opening on over 1,000 theatres.

Earlier this year in January, Blumhouse's "Split" opened to a monster $40 million in January, and went on to earn $278.3 million worldwide.

No one gets a better return on investment than Blumhouse Productions, which could probably finance three years' worth of movies with the profits from one Paranormal Activity film.

The Foreigner - a US-China co-production between STXfilms, Sparkle Roll Media, and Wanda - opened to US$12.8 million from 2,515 locations.

Otherwise, "The Foreigner" - a U.S. The Thurgood Marshall biopic "Marshall" took in $3 million from 821 theaters and "Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman" earned only $737,000 from over 1,200 locations.

Meanwhile, the horror hit It remained in the top four, with an estimated $6 million this weekend and a total of approximately $315 million in North America alone, and another $10 million internationally to bring its total gross to around $630 million, good for ninth largest release of 2017. Rounding out the top five is Fox's "The Mountain Between Us", which is taking in $5.7 million from 3,259 locations.
