WhatsApp adds location tracking in case you forget where you are

Now WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging platforms out there, is announcing its own effort in the location sharing game.

Of all of Facebook's various properties, WhatsApp definitely isn't the fastest when it comes to adding new features or catching up with competitors in that regard.

The feature is simply called Live Location, and it is found within a chat under the "Location" option.

Whether you're meeting up with friends, letting loved ones know you're safe, or sharing your commute, Live Location is a simple and secure way to let people know where you are.

The Live Location tool offers a real-time map that will enable friends to follow your whereabouts for a set period of time. Users can choose to stop sharing their locations whenever, or let the Live Location timer expire. Live location sharing is end-to-end encrypted and you can control who to share with and for how long. You'll need to open a chat with the people or person you want to share your location with; after doing that, select the duration during which you want your live location to be visible to others. Tapping the shared location opens a full map that shows when the person's location was last updated, as well as their avatar.

WhatsApp says that this latest feature is coming to both Android and iOS and will be rolling out over the "coming weeks".
