Trump's call came only a short while after he claimed that President Obama had not often made calls to the families of fallen servicemen, a claim quickly proven to be a lie. The dispute was fresh evidence of Trump's willingness to attack any critic and do battle over the most sensitive of matters - and critics' readiness to find fault with his words.

"Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof)".

When asked to clarify the controversy, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said, "I am not going to get into the back and the forth". He said Tuesday: "I think I've called every family of someone who's died" while suggesting past presidents had not.

According to the newspaper, the evening was focused exclusively on Johnson, a 25-year-old father of two children, with a third on the way, who was remembered as "a G.I. Joe", "a leader", and "a lovable, humble, peaceful person". She said she is having a hard time processing that he is gone.

The Florida Democrat said she was in the auto with the widow, Myeshia Johnson, on the way to Miami International Airport to meet the body when Mr Trump called to offer condolences.

While the Trump administration has yet to declare that the opposing fighters in Niger were members of ISIS, CNN has reported that the fighters were part of the ISIS-affiliated group: ISIS in the Greater Sahara.

Johnson was born in Miami Gardens, Florida and graduated from Miami Carol City Senior High School. Myeshia is now pregnant with the couple's third child expected to be born in January.
