Gold Star family slams Trump for 'selfish, divisive' actions

The Murphys' remarks came after Trump claimed, without merit, earlier this week that his predecessors hadn't written or called the families of slain U.S. troops, though the tradition of presidents reaching out to service members' relatives is long-established. Sgt. Johnson's mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, who was also in the vehicle, confirmed the account, and said "President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband". He has a bad record on Gold Star families. A day later, there's been so much back and forth following Trump's reported crass phone call, in which he stated to a grieving military widow, "He knew what he was getting into".

"So the traditional way, if you look at President Obama and other presidents, majority didn't make calls, a lot of them didn't make calls".

Trump claimed at the White House on Monday that Obama and "other presidents" did not make calls to the families of fallen soldiers, sparking backlash. They were laid out in her family room on Wednesday showing her son Sgt. Joseph Hunt's service overseas. She has stacks of letters, scrapbooks and pictures. "She knows it", Trump said.

"He said, 'I'm going to write you a check out of my personal account for $25,000, ' and I was just floored", Baldridge told the Post. "We weren't really expecting it but it came and it's something that we hold dear and we've put it up for storage because that's something I would like for his boys to have someday", said Hunt.

"It doesn't matter if I hear from the White House or not. I don't know what Bush did, I don't know what Obama did", Trump said. "She probably, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say". "Somebody noticed", she said. Sometimes they call, sometimes they send a letter, other times they have the opportunity to meet family members in person. She says they did that in Nashville and the experience was incredibly meaningful.

Kelly criticized a Florida congresswoman for listening to the president's phone call to the family.
