Tottenham can win big matches without star players - Pochettino

The report states that there are suggestions talks between the north Londoners and the Catalan club surround the key figure in Spurs' midfield have already began, with the assist king one they believe would fit perfectly into boss Ernesto Valverde's side.

Poch has used a variety of formations this season, including 3-4-3, 3-4-2-1, 4-4-1-1 and his old favourite 4-2-3-1.

Central defensive rock Jan Vertonghen was moved to left back, a three-man central midfield featured two callow young Englishmen and new signing Fernando Llorente, hardly used so far, formed an ambitious two-pronged attack with Harry Kane.

Pochettino, 45, confessed: "It was incredible. What is going on in his mind?'"

"Ten minutes after the end of the game, they said, 'You are a genius!' It's so hard to explain every single game what we are trying to do and translate it to the fans". He needs to find that feeling where he can say 'now yes, I am available again to compete.' It was a similar situation with Danny and I hope maybe he can be on the bench against West Ham, but it's not sure.

But having stayed put, he has played a full part in a journey that has taken in successive Premier League title challenges and glamorous fixtures such as Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Real Madrid.

And that improvement allows him to switch formations as his players believe in his methods.

"It is hard to be in complete agreement with the manager", the Argentinian said.

"This not only happens in Tottenham, it happens around the world".

One player who could be on their way out of the club is Gareth Bale, with the former Tottenham Hotspur player having one injury too many and testing the patience of the board and manager beyond fix.

"Everyone waits to see the shape or the system or the starting XI, and everyone disagrees".

And Pochettino explained: "Last season it was hard to cope with competitions - the Champions League and the Premier league. But it's not a five or ten-year record, it's two years we have been playing".

Rose came off the bench against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday to make his first appearance since suffering a knee injury nearly nine months ago. "But now we need to wait next week to have a more clear idea of what's going on".
