Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a stout defence of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, saying it would lead to the moderation of prices and directly benefit the poor.

There will be strict guidelines to protect consumers from misleading ads. "The focus is on consumer empowerment and ensuring that the consumer faces no difficulties". "Punishment for trading in a wrong way has also been laid down", said PM Modi while inaugurating a global conference in Delhi. The biggest beneficiaries of GST will be the consumers and middle class.

"Government is making efforts to ensure inflation is kept under check and the consumer saves money", he said.

The Prime Minister further reiterated that the effective grievance redressal systems were vital for a democracy and the Centre was integrating technology and ensuring stronger grievance redressal mechanisms.

These are in line with the government's idea of a "New India", he said.
