Indonesia fireworks factory explosion kills dozens

At least 23 people have been killed in an explosion at a fireworks factory near Jakarta.

The fire began Thursday morning next to a residential area in Tangerang, in the western outskirts of Jakarta.

Tangerang police chief Hary Kurniawan says the death toll could rise further as numerous dozens of injured have extensive burns.

"We are still evacuating victims. there are 46 body bags".

'There are 103 workers in total at this factory, 43 are injured and being treated in three hospitals, the remains of 23 victims have been found, ' Nico Afinta from Jakarta police told Kompas TV. Witnesses reported hearing blasts erupt from the site.

The video and media images of the PT Panca Buana Cahaya Sukses warehouse showed smouldering ash and debris, with the roof missing in some parts.

The factory had been operating since the last two months, media reports said. Ten fire trucks were sent to the scene, Suhermanto said.

Indonesia has poor fire safety standards and industrial fires are not uncommon.
