Massa's son gives him tear-jerking message over team radio

Alonso was frustrated in his race-long battle to pass Felipe Massa at Interlagos for seventh place, spending the entire race tucked up behind the Brazilian's Williams but unable to pass his Mercedes-powered rival due to the lack of straightline speed from McLaren's Honda engines. A stark contrast to retiring in wet conditions 12 months ago in what turned out to be a dress rehearsal for his actual retirement.

If you don't feel a twinge of emotion after that, you are officially dead inside.

"Thank you for everything that we passed together, for all the support". The thrill I felt today was vast, just like a year ago. I drove a ideal race from beginning to end, managed the tyres, managed everything around the vehicle. "I love you. By the way, I loved your start".

During that spell, one of the most memorable moments of the season occurred, as the voice of Massa's young son Felipinho delivered a tear-jerking message to his father: "Daddy, I'm so proud of you". I had a few lock ups in the first corner basically for no real reason but I was checking on Hamilton from the mirrors as it is hard to see when you are spread out and you can lose sight of them. "By the way, I loved your start!"

Back in the paddock, Massa described his P7 finish as "like a victory".

Speaking later to Sky Sports, Massa said: "It's so hard to explain my feelings today".

"Last year I had such incredible emotion, walking through the pit lane, but I was missing the result". I knew he had better pace than me.

"I'm happy for him". It's so fantastic to finish the race and see the emotion of the people after such an wonderful race.

"It was a very hard race for me. It was a good end but I wanted more". I drove a ideal race from beginning to end, managed the tyres, managed everything around the vehicle, the pace I had.

"So I think today was definitely like a victory for me".

"I have now enjoyed four great years with the team, but my career in Formula 1 will finally come to an end this season".

"It was a race that I will never forget".

"Yes, it's true we are suffering", said the 36-year-old.
