Nets G Russell has knee contusion

Brooklyn Nets guard D'Angelo Russell is expected to miss several games after suffering a left knee injury against the Utah Jazz on Saturday.

Russell was examined Sunday by team doctors and underwent an MRI and the Nets said "return to play updates will be provided as appropriate". For a franchise that dealt with Jeremy Lin's ruptured patellar tendon on opening night, that image gave Nets fans a scare.

As he drove to the basket with a little under three minutes remaining in the game, Russell tried to stop on a dime. Russell landed awkwardly and hobbled to the bench before going to the locker room. We haven't heard a timetable yet and we don't know the diagnosis, but it sounds like it's a contusion. Unfortunately, it couldn't have occurred at a more inconvenient time.

The Brooklyn Nets' point guard problems have just gotten pretty serious. Should Russell be out for an extended period as well, the spotlight will be on Spencer Dinwiddie.

The Nets are underdogs in their next three home contests against the Boston Celtics, Jazz and the Golden State Warriors before they head on the road to face Cleveland.
