2 militants killed in Handwara encounter

Two terrorists were killed by security forces after they opened fire at a police check post in the Handwara area. Handwara sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Shabir Khan said the militants fired on a joint party of police and the Army, triggering the shootout.

The official said bodies of two militants have been recovered and their identification was being ascertained.

Birdi said that a policeman was injured in the militant attack.

Sources said that almost 70 security personnel have lost their lives in the line of duty this year, while an equal number of ultras have infiltrated into Kashmir in the past 10 months. The militants are heard telling Ahmad not to approach the police and also warn him against joining politics.

Additional security forces were rushed to cordon the area to foil any attempt by militants to escape.

He said the police, CRPF and army men have launched search operation in the area to nab the possible accomplices of the slain militants.
