Jimmy Fallon pays tearful tribute to his mother

On Monday evening, Jimmy Fallon made an emotional return to The Tonight Show following a week-long hiatus from his late-night slot after his mum Gloria's passing, and Taylor Swift was there to make the hard time a little sweeter with a moving rendition of "New Year's Day".

On Monday's broadcast, Fallon thanked viewers and colleagues for all of their support over the last few days.

Gloria Fallon had attended the taping of her son's first night hosting "The Tonight Show" in 2014.

Taylor's appearance was the first performance on the show since Jimmy returned following the passing of his mother.

"She was the best audience", Fallon said.

"The Tonight Show" had canceled its episode November 3, following reports of a family matter.

The emotional host shared a story about his mother squeezing his hand three times to signify, "I love you", when he was a child. In his speech, Fallon said that he'd "never stop trying to make her laugh". She said yes with zero hesitation. "I just knew we were in trouble". "Tears. I think everyone in the audience started sobbing", he wrote. I could see Jimmy silhouetted at his desk dabbing his eyes with a tissue. "It was a attractive coincidence in a lovely performance", he wrote. So, when Swift performed the poignant "New Year's Day" which coincidentally featured the lyric, "Squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi", Fallon and his staff got a little emotional.
