Amazon to adapt Lord Of The Rings for TV

Amazon has landed the granddaddy of them all, though, announcing this week they have begun pre-production on a new series based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy.

"'The Lord of the Rings" is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen", said Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series for Amazon Studios.

The multi-season adaptation will feature "new story lines preceding Tolkien's The Fellowship Of The Ring", which is the first Rings book, Amazon said in a statement. Here's hoping the team at Amazon is up to the task! That's not to say that Amazon is going to take that sort of comparison lying down and in an attempt to up their stock they have announced the production of a brand new The Lord of The Rings series for their streaming service.

Amazon Studios will be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust to resurrect the franchise that Peter Jackson magnificently brought to life in the early 00's in the form of a movie trilogy that set the standard for Hollywood blockbusters. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below! Amazon also noted that the deal also includes a potential spinoff series, which opens up a world of possibilities for the LOTR universe.

A world-renowned literary work, and victor of the International Fantasy Award and Prometheus Hall of Fame Award, The Lord of the Rings novels was named Amazon customers' favorite book of the millennium in 1999 and Britain's best-loved novel of all time in BBC's The Big Read in 2003. These new TV shows will be produced in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, book publisher HarperCollins and Warner Bros.
