I&B curtain falls on Nude, S Durga

After making the right noises at numerous worldwide film festivals, S Durga a film which tells the story of a couple running away in the night and their encounters with sexist people will now not be screened at IFFI.

Ghosh has reportedly confirmed the news, but did not reveal anything more. My film is slotted at global festivals like Berlin and Cannes, but it's always a dream to have one's own country view it and the ultimate goal remains a National Award.

The jury submitted its list to the ministry on September 20-21, but the line-up was made public only recently and without the name of the two films, a member had disclosed. On Tuesday afternoon, National Award-winning editor and a senior jury member, Apurva Asrani too resigned. "So no controversy should have been there", Sanal Kumar Sasidharan further said. According to reports the jury members of IFFI were not aware of this decision as well. But The information and broadcasting ministry overruled the decision of IFFI jury and removed Marathi film Nude and Malayalam film from the 48th edition of this festival. "If the ministry has taken this reason I am sure there must have been a valid reason". "They have asked the I&B ministry to send an explanation for its move and on the basis of this, it will take a decision on Thursday, November 16", explains the lawyer. Nude was earlier scheduled to open the festival but now it has been replaced by Hindi movie Pihu by Vinod Kapri.

Rajesh Kumar Singh, a member of the preview committee that selects entries from the Indian Panorama section for the worldwide competition at IFFI, took up the issue of the two films on Twitter.

Director Shyam Benegal, who earlier filed a petition to the I&B ministry to curb the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) power to make cuts to films, says that a move like this is simply wrong. "Sumitra Bhave's film Kaasav, which won the Golden Lotus, was supposed to be screened at IFFI".

Nude is the film that tells the story of a nude model in one arts school. It was selected as the opening film. "An opportunity to be heard had to be given to me", he said.

The national award-winning director also said that it is hard to accept that a selected film is removed from the festival without any explanation, "My film was chosen for this, you can't take away my right". This was the inaugural film in the Indian panorama.
