MSU vs. Duke in Champions Classic

The opener pits the top two-ranked teams in the country, when No. 2 Michigan State takes on No. 1 Duke in the Champions Classic in Chicago.

According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Duke is favored in tonight's contest, as the Blue Devils are getting odds of -2 points against Michigan State.

There's really no better way to ring in the new college basketball season that with an onslaught of hoops games to open the year. The contest will air live on ESPN. This year, the Spartans get a third crack in the event against Duke and both teams will be doing it in style. The Blue Devils have covered the spread in the lone lined game they have played in. Cassius Winston was also good for Michigan State, with 12 points and 8 assists in the win.

Freshman Marvin Bagley III left the game with an eye injury in the first half. All five starters scored in double figures in the Spartans' 98-66 win over North Florida last Friday. The Spartans were young past year and struggled to find consistency, but returns almost the whole team.

The league announced the award on Monday following Maye setting a career high in points, 26, and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds in Carolina's victory over Northern Iowa. Michigan State has just four wins all-time in 23 total tries against the AP top-ranked team, but they are 3-4 in seven such recent matchups.

Miles Bridges, Jaren Jackson and Nick Ward each scored 19 points to lead the Spartans. Bagley also became just the second Duke freshman to record a double-double in a season opener (Jason Williams vs. Stanford on November 11, 1999).
