Panthers rookie WR Curtis Samuel to undergo season-ending surgery

The Panthers announced the second-round pick will undergo season-ending ankle surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.

Samuel had a chance to catch a Cam Newton pass in the end zone early in the third quarter Monday night, and Dolphins safety Reshad Jones rolled over Samuel's ankle as he was diving for the interception.

Samuel's improvement was one of the factors for why the Panthers traded wideout Kelvin Benjamin to the Buffalo Bills prior to the trading deadline.

An MRI on Tuesday confirmed as much, leaving Samuel with 15 catches (on 26 targets) for 115 yards and four rushes for 64 yards in nine games as a rookie.

Offensive coordinator Mike Shula said Samuel will be replaced by committee, referring to Kaelin Clay, Russell Sheppard and even running back Christian McCaffrey. Is there anybody as fast as him? The Carolina Panthers are second in the NFC South behind the New Orleans Saints. We're going to try hard to find ways to put guys in place for what they do best and then have them go do it.

The Panthers are in the hunt for a playoff berth but the offense it began with to start the season looks a whole lot different from what it's comprised of the rest of the season. "It was guys coming in and doing their job and knowing their assignments".
