- According to KCRA, three people were shot at a school in Tehama County.

The shooter is understood to have been killed by law enforcement authorities.

The Sherrif's office said that the shooting happened at around 8:00 AM local time with reports of somebody barricaded in a structure and of multiple victims.

Three people were being treated at a hospital in Redding, about 100km north of the shootings.

A witness named Tiffany, who operates Coffee Addiction Coffee Shop near the school, told KRCR News Channel 7 she heard 90-100 shots fired.

Johnston said that a greater tragedy was averted due to the quick thinking of school officials.

Authorities have recovered a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns after the shootings in the rural subdivision described on its website as a "quiet private country community" where "the people are friendly and the pace is relaxed". No information about their conditions was immediately available, according to a spokeswoman for the hospital, about 45 miles from the school.

Posts on social media showed Rancho Tehama Road being closed off with yellow crime tape, and students' parents stuck behind the road block.

Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement offering condolences to families who lost loved ones in "today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren".
