Will quit if observation against me in HC signed verdict: Thomas Chandy

On the minister's contentions against the findings of the collector's report, the court pointed out that he should have taken up his grievances with the district collector itself instead of knocking on the doors of the high court.

Although Chandy, who holds the transport portfolio, submitted that he had quit the membership from the company's director board when he assumed charge as minister, the court said it has no idea about his position in the firm.

The opposition Congress' agitation against Chandy lost some steam after its own Rajya Sabha MP and lawyer Vivek Tankha appeared for the minister in the high court. He cited a Supreme Court observation that court's oral observations need not be considered as final verdict. "Vijayan appears to have stumbled before the "cash rich" Chandy and Vijayan is also now an accused like Chandy as he has failed to ask for his resignation", said Sudheeran. The judges found the minister moving court against the state government to be a violation of the collective responsibility of the Cabinet and therefore against the Constitution.

The state unit of Chandy's party, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has asked its central leadership to decide on Chandy's future in the CPM-led Left Democratic Front government.

Meanwhile, Chandy is at Kochi and is likely to reach the state capital late in the night to take part in the weekly cabinet meeting held every Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said an "appropriate decision" would be taken at the right time after examining the high court order and the NCP's decision.

NCP state president TP Peethambaran Master along with other party leaders will meet CM.

Mr Vijayan said the LDF had earlier chose to entrust him to take an appropriate decision on the matter after looking into all aspects. The petition was the one that had sought withdrawal of Alappuzha district collector's report against him in the backwater encroachment case. The leaders of the party maintained high probity in public life.
