Refreshed 2018 Mazda6 Coming to LA Auto Show, Receives Turbo Option

A turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 lifted from the larger CX-9 crossover will be slotted under the 2018 6's hood.

A DECADE after the Mazda 6 MPS disappeared from Australian showrooms, the badge is potentially about to make a comeback.

Mazda has announced it will pull the wraps off what it calls a "2.5T" version of the mid-size sedan as part of a major mid-life overhaul of the range that will be unveiled at the LA Motor Show, which kicks off late this month.

The company confirms it will be introducing its 2.5-litre turbo "SkyActiv-G" four-cylinder for the medium-size vehicle.

The current-generation SKYACTIV-G 2.5 offers up to 35 mpg (6.7 l/100km) on the highway. So much so that the torque output is on par with some V8 engines with nearly twice the displacement, Mazda says. A new 2.5-liter gasoline engine with cylinder deactivation will be the standard offering for the auto.

Technology-wise, the 2018 Mazda6 will offer the latest 360° View Monitor, as well as a new function for the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), which can now bring the vehicle to a standing stop and drive off again when the auto in front moves away.

For those looking for a more practically-enhanced 6, Mazda has now introduced cylinder deactivation on the base 2.5-liter mill for less frequent trips to the pumps in addition to a wider suite of the brand's active safety tech, including radar cruise control and a 360° View Monitor.

Mazda has not given too much away as to the new 6's design, but from what we can see of in the photos released thus far, most of the exterior elements remain the same with tweaks to the grille, lower intake, and possibly the side paneling.
