Mauricio Pochettino: My Tottenham team will always have an English core

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld is facing at least another six weeks out with a hamstring injury.

Tottenham's title charge has been dealt a huge blow with the news that Toby Alderweireld could be sidelined for the rest of the year.

But Tottenham's medical staff had not anticipated such a lengthy lay-off for the 28-year-old Alderweireld on November 1 when a hamstring problem forced him off after just 24 minutes of a Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Speaking ahead of Wenger's 43rd North London derby in the Premier League, Pochettino described him as "my enemy" and "my colleague" and added at a news conference: "What he is doing at Arsenal and as a manager, I would like to be like him one day: 20 years at Tottenham!"

Despite their huge strides and finishing above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years, Tottenham still having nothing to show for it in terms of silverware, whereas the Gunners have won the FA Cup on two occasions, within the same time period. It will be longer [than we thought].

"It's a little bit sad but in the same way he is focused now on trying to recover as soon as possible".

"We are optimistic but we need to wait and analyse every single case", Pochettino said.

"For first time today, all the players arrived from the global break and we need to assess all of them tomorrow - we have one more training session". After almost three and a half years the most important thing is we have a team that's very competitive and can compete with Real Madrid.

"I'm disappointed because it changed a lot".

"The under-17s, U19s and U21s make me believe even more in English talent and everyone realises, 'Oh we have good talent in our boys.' It's important to see".

"I admire all that Arsene Wenger has made at Arsenal, but we are at a different stage of the project". They are not close to first team but it is a fantastic experience for them.
