Florida 'advancing discussions' with Chip Kelly

Florida 'advancing discussions' with Chip Kelly

Six Florida officials flew up to New Hampshire over the weekend to make a pitch to Kelly on Sunday, and sources say both sides felt the meeting went well.

The Florida Gators' pursuit of Chip Kelly picked steam on Sunday.

Stricklin and his assistants flew in and out of Ocala, Florida, about a half hour from Florida's campus. However, Kelly is also rumored to be in talks to become the head coach at Florida.

He added that "we've got a process we're going through".

A complicating factor could be the opening at UCLA; the school dismissed coach Jim Mora and Sunday and could be a more natural fit for Kelly. "I'm in Bristol on the weekends and in New Hampshire during the week".

Asked on ESPN's SportsCenter about his interest in the Gators' job, Kelly joked, "Is this your way of firing me?"

"I really enjoy what I'm doing now", Kelly said.

Speculation of Kelly's imminent hire ramped up last week, with speculation he was on a flight to Gainesville.

The only time Kelly, a New Hampshire native, has spent in the FBS ranks came at OR, and he recruited southern California extensively when he was at Oregon.

The New Hampshire native led the Ducks to three top-four finishes in his final three seasons in the Pac-12 before moving on to the National Football League, where he spent four years as a head coach.

Chip Kelly won three Pac-12 championships with OR from 2009-2011 and finished his four-year tenure in Eugene with a record of 46-7.
