Uber is also broadening its beacon program, which uses a hardware device in the driver's windshield to display a corresponding door to riders to help them find the vehicle more easily.

Through call to ride, riders can call single phone number and enter a numeric code displayed on signage to help Uber identify their location.

Second, you can now choose to display your live location to the driver, useful if you've been unable to find each other at the planned pickup spot. The taxi service provider has added most popular points of interest in the city under this option so that riders can enter their destinations without any connection. This is an important feature especially when the rider is walking towards the pickup location so the driver of the called Uber auto is not left in dark. For example, a driver will be able to see if the person is walking around the corner or slightly down the street from the pickup location.

To use this feature, the person requesting the ride for a guest can simply tap "Where to?", then choose who is riding above their pickup location. This would enable the driver to locate the user once the user clicks on the grey icon on the bottom right of the screen. The feature allows riders to share their current location with drivers. Location sharing will stop when the ride begins, but users can also stop it by hitting the icon again or going to the app's privacy settings.

Uber has also made it easier to request a ride for someone else, and adding in-app gifting, allowing you to send Uber credit to a friend or family member. It's not rolling out in NYC, SF and Chicago after an initial limited pilot, so it'll be available to more riders and drivers during the busiest ride hailing time of the year. The person taking the ride will receive an SMS from Uber with trip details, including the estimated arrival time of the Uber auto, the vehicle type and the driver's contact information so they can contact them directly if necessary without going through the person who requested the ride.
