Dhinakaran in fray for RK Nagar bypoll

AIADMK Sasikala faction leader TTV Dinakaran on Friday said he would contest the RK Nagar by-elections, adding that he would take back the original party symbol "two leaves" which was given to the EPS-OPS faction by the Election Commission.

The faction led by Dhinakaran had also laid claim to the symbol soon after the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa.

The EC announced that the by-elections will be held on December 21 - the counting of which will be held on December 24.

For more than one reason, the bypolls to RK Nagar constituency which is likely to be held before Christmas will serve as the acid test for the EPS-OPS duo since this is the first elections that the AIADMK will face after the demise of its charismatic leader J. Jayalalithaa last December.

The announcement comes days after the Madras High Court ordered that the bye-poll must be conducted by the end of the year.It also comes a day after the Election Commission recognised the ruling faction of Edappadi Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam as the AIADMK and allotted them the two leaves symbol.

The bypoll elections got cancelled after there were allegations of cash for votes and two-leaves symbol bribery cases.

Dhinakaran made the comment while addressing party workers in Tiruppur.

Last time, BJP had fielded music director Gangai Amaran as its candidate.

Dhinakaran said since he has the people's support, he was not anxious to contest against AIADMK's "two leaves" poll symbol, which was given to the Palaniswami-Pannerselvam faction.

Professor at the prestigious Loyola College, said the elections would decide whether it is the symbol that garnered votes for the AIADMK or it was the personality i.e. Jayalalithaa.

Dinakaran had earlier said he would contest in the by-election whenever it is held.
