Olympic Stadium and the Sydney Football Stadium will be demolished and rebuilt

Gladys Berejiklian and the NSW Parliament have finally signed off on a deal that will see both the Sydney Olympic Stadium and the Sydney Football Stadium completely torn down and rebuilt, in a project that's set to cost the state a whopping $2.3billion.

Opposition Leader Luke Foley supported the rebuilding of the Olympic stadium but said the work at Moore Park was a waste of money.

The plan, to be officially announced on Friday, is larger in scope and significantly more costly than the vision put forward by former premier Mike Baird in 2016, which would have seen the two stadiums refurbished only.

The Olympic Stadium will be replaced by a 75,000-seater structure, possibly with a roof, at a cost of £850m starting in 2019, with the construction of the new SFS getting underway next year and scheduled for completion by 2021.

Of all the stupid infrastructure spending we've witnessed over the years, the NSW Government's 2 billion expenditure on the Olympic Stadium and the Sydney Football Stadium is right up there.

The stadium has been a regular venue for the annual National Rugby League grand finals, and hosted the 2003 Rugby World Cup finals, Bledisloe Cup matches and the 2015 AFC Asian Cup Final.

Australia co-hosted the first Rugby World Cup in 1987 and were sole hosts in 2003, when the final was played at the Olympic Stadium.

"When we are finished our stadiums will be the envy of the world".

The three main tenants of Allianz Stadium, the Waratahs, the NRL's Roosters and Sydney FC will be displaced from late 2018.

"This is great news for our members, our team, our commercial partners, all our supporters, our Board and our staff", he said in a statement. "And it is pleasing that that the Government has recognised the importance of having a world-class stadium in the sporting hub of Sydney", Hore said.
