Science says putting up Christmas decorations early makes you happier

We all know at least one of those people who's already placing an angel on top of his or her Christmas tree while everyone else on the block still has paper ghosts stuck to their windows and a rotting pumpkin on the stoop.

So, just when is the right time to put up your Christmas decorations?

Steve McKeown, a psychoanalyst and owner of The McKeown Clinic, told Unilad that putting decorations up early is a straight-shooting neurological pipeline to the warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia around your childhood Christmases. Time to whip out your Christmas tree.

"In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate [with] things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood", he said.

Decorations are a way to ignite those magical moments of excitement during old childhood days.

That means that if you've got your lights going, you're more likely to be considered friendly by your neighbours.

"Or maybe looking at a Christmas tree reminds someone of what life was like when they still believed in Santa". Perhaps the holidays serve as a reminder of when a loved one was still alive.

"For people who have lost a loved one, the holidays may serve as a reminder of happy times they had with that person in the past". In the absence of Christmas decorations, raters accurately distinguished between the homes of sociable and nonsociable residents; in open ended comments, they attributed their impressions to the relatively more "open" and "lived in' look of the sociable residents' homes".

And past scientific research suggests another theory.

Despite all those reasons, we'd probably do it for the craic and because we are obsessed with Christmas.

Amusing enough, Christmas music can have the opposite effect.

Give us a break!

According to The British Christmas Tree Grower's Association trees should be bought no earlier than December 1 to prevent needles dropping before the big day.
