Atiku best suited as PDP presidential candidate - Ojo

The Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has said that there was no precondition for the return of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to the party, but the PDP will accord due respect to him and others of similar status.

Hundreds of party faithful had amassed around the vicinity of the Wadata Plaza National Secretariat of the PDP as early as 9:30am in anticipation of his visit which leaked early this morning.

Makarfi's explanation came just as the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Timi Frank blamed the ruling party's national leadership for the imminent massive defection that he claimed was about to hit the APC.

He was received by the Spokesman for the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye. So are all other PDP men and women are free to pursue whatever political aspirations they may have.

It would be recalled that, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku who dumped PDP for APC in 2014, returned to PDP on Sunday December 3, 2017.

At the inauguration of the convention committee, Makarfi.said there would not be any concession for Atiku or any other person coming into the party. "The party members reserve the right to give mandate to anyone they wish to give their mandate to", he said.

The committee, headed by the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, also barred the supporters of the presidential ticket contenders from the venue on Saturday.

Okowa said his committee was trying to put up these measures in order to avoid overcrowding at the venue.

He urged the party members to "run away" from act that may negatively affect the convention.

"They would be voting for candidates and not political parties, so the issue of which party Atiku belongs to does not arise", he said. What we want are people who can help us win elections and Atiku is one of them.

"There is no power of incumbency in Nigeria now".

He said it was high time APC realised that politics is about numbers and every youth, man or woman is important.

"I believe there will be an appropriate convention for that".

Also speaking, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, BoT, Senator Walid Jibrin, declared the readiness of the board to partner with the National Working Committee, Governors Forum and all other stakeholders in the party to ensure a smooth conduct of the convention.
