PayPal acquisition TIO Networks leaked 1.6 million customer details in breach

It said it had entirely suspended TIO's operations as of November 10 "to protect customer data as part of an ongoing investigation of security vulnerabilities of the TIO platform".

PayPal-owned payment processing provider TIO Networks says the personal details of as many as 1.6 million people could have been compromised.

"At this point, TIO can not provide a timeline for restoring bill payment services, and continues to recommend that you contact your biller to identify alternative ways to pay your bills", TIO Networks says.

Hundreds of thousands of Duke Energy customers in the Carolinas may have been exposed to a possible breach of info, officials said Monday.

PayPal launched an internal investigation into the newly-acquired firm's business and hired a third-party cyberforensics company to review the TIO bill payment platform after suspending operations, revealing the data breach.

Duke Energy officials said customers whose info may have been accessed will receive instructions from TIO on how to register for one year of complimentary credit monitoring.

PayPal recently suspended TIO Networks' operations as it found the latter's platform not compatible with its information security standards.

.

PayPal paid around $238 million to acquire TIO in July, with the goal of reaching more consumers who don't have traditional financial accounts.

TIO Networks now has about 14 million customer bill pay accounts for utilities, telecommunications, cable or wireless bills, and processed over $7 billion in bill payments previous year.

'At this point, TIO can not provide a timeline for restoring bill pay services and continues to recommend that you contact your biller to identify alternative ways to pay your bills.
