Amazon to launch Prime membership for Singapore, ends free shipping for non-members

The e-commerce player made its first foray into the region with the launch of its fast delivery service Prime Now in July. This week, Singapore customers will be able to enjoy Prime benefits including exclusive access to free two-hour delivery on orders over S$40 with tens of thousands of items and unlimited free global shipping on orders above S$60 on more than 5 million items from Amazon US - all available in the Prime Now App. Our attempts to order items from the Amazon US website itself didn't seem to include or display the benefits of our Amazon Prime Singapore membership.

When contacted by Yahoo News Singapore, Amazon declined to comment on when charges for customers eligible for the introductory fee will revert to the original price of S$8.99 per month.

He also said that the company is also taking into account what Singapore customers want.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Amazon Prime International's vice president Jamil Ghani noted that the Prime membership is country-specific and not transferable at all - those who already have US Prime memberships can not convert them to local ones, and vice versa.

These services would be sought now that the American retailer has ended its Free AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping service to Singapore. And this is just the beginning.

"We have been very encouraged by the strong response and adoption of Prime Now over the last several months", he added.

According The Straits Times, Singapore is the 16th country and the first in Southeast Asia to enjoy this service. "Amazon has also been adding more local brands that are preferred by local customers, such as Sunshine bread and Bebe Bamboo, as well as collaborating with local partners such as UOB for promotions", she explained.

The Prime membership will entitle the customers of Singapore to have access to more than five million products listed on Amazon's site in the United States.

Prime is Amazon's popular membership program that provides exclusive access to benefits such as fast shipping, streaming and gaming.

According to Amazon, for this week, Singapore customers who are Prime members get to enjoy exclusive access to free two-hour delivery on orders over S$40.

Another service available to Singapore's Amazon Prime subscribers is video streaming.

Mr Ghani acknowledged that some living here already have Amazon Prime memberships for the U.S. site, but encouraged "anyone living in Singapore to leverage the Prime membership package developed specifically for Singapore". Since 2005, Prime has been focused on making customers' lives better every day.
