Charlotte Hornets coach Clifford taking leave from team

The team announced on Wednesday that head coach Steve Clifford will step away from the team to deal with an undisclosed health concern. The team said at the time that he was absent due to an illness.

Clifford has served as the head coach of the Hornets since the 2013-14 season, leading the team to a 169-181 record and two postseason appearances.

There is no timetable to Clifford's return, nor will the Hornets have additional comments out of respect for his privacy, the team's statement said.

Hornets associate head coach Stephen Silas will serve as the acting head coach.

Silas had coached Monday's game against the Orlando Magic, receiving a text at 2 p.m. that afternoon saying Clifford would be unable to coach.

However, they have not done so thus far, as they have gotten off to a disappointing 9-13 start and have lost four of their last five games. The Hornets return to action tonight at Spectrum Center in Charlotte against the defending NBA Champion Golden State Warriors.
