Dead Baby Wakes Up At Funeral In India

The Shalimar Bagh branch of Max Hospital was accused of medical negligence when the infant was found alive after it was declared "dead" along with his still-born twin by the hospital.

"After being declared dead, babies were given to us in packets, when we left for cremation ground we noticed movement and on checking found one was breathing".

The baby was taken straight back to hospital and placed on life support.

The hospital said: "We are shaken and concerned at this rare incident".

His father, known only as Ashish, told Delhi-TV the physicians also demanded extra money to improve the chances of keeping the baby and his mother, who was injured during the pregnancy, alive.

The police grilled doctors AP Mehta and Vishal Gupta of Max, who have been terminated, regarding the case for four hours on Monday asking whether the newborn was declared dead without proper examination because he was less than 24 months old.

Hospital records and surveillance footage is now under review.

One of 14 "Max Healthcare Super Specialty" hospitals, the hospital boasts of world-class healthcare services. "While the inquiry by the expert group which includes external experts from the IMA is still in process, we have chose to terminate the services of two treating doctors, Dr AP Mehta and Dr Vishal Gupta in the case relating to the twin extreme pre-term babies", Max Healthcare had said in a statement.

The hospital noted that while the termination of employment for two of the hospital's doctors reflects a "commitment to higher standards of care", it is not a statement which finds the doctors at fault. He said the government ordered an inquiry on Friday when it came to know about the alleged negligence of the hospital.

"There is definitely a mistake", Aggarwal said.
