This time around, new emoji include figures such as a teddy bear, cupcake, party face, and redheads.

2018 could be the year of changeable emoji directions. "However, that can cause a definite change in meaning when exchanging text across platforms".

The draft emoji 11.0β Charts now show the candidates in context: for example, Emoji Ordering, v11.0β shows the sorting of all the emoji, with the candidates highlighted with rounded-rectangles. But, essentially it means we'll be able to choose an "explicit direction" for certain emoji. A new section now outlines a ZWJ mechanism which will let the vendor switch directions of any emoji.

Of course, the guidelines are still a draft for Unicode 11.0 and the proposed Emoji 11.0 characters are now in beta. Images: Apple / Emojipedia composite.

The excitement is palpable with the Unicode Consortium announcing their latest list of emoji in the Emoji 11 (formerly Emoji 6.0) beta list overnight.

'Emojipedia users have long requested a way to flip emoji direction, and if this feature goes ahead it is likely to target only the emojis that would benefit from it most, ' Jeremy Burge, editor of Emojipedia wrote.

However some proposals have already been canned - including a frowning pile of poo, mango and redheads.

Soon you'll be able to make two aubergines touch each other - and doesn't want that? The decisions of the 2017Q4 UTC meeting for emoji have been incorporated into the draft Charts, Specification, and Data, and are now available for testing and feedback.
