Osmania University Students Protest After Student Hangs Himself in Hostel

Tension prevailed on the Osmania University campus on Monday as police personnel and protesting students clashed following a 21-year-old MSc student's suicide inside a hostel on Sunday evening.

After learning about Murali's death, a large number of students gathered near the hostel.

The police who rushed to the spot at 3pm as the resentment started, recovered a suicide note form the pocket of the deceased, which was purported written by him says, I am unable to continue my studies.

The note read that he had never failed in any examination.

On 4 December, a protest gathering called Koluvula Kotlaata (Fight for Employment), organized by Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC), was held in Hyderabad. The police arrested 22 students on Monday, charging them with violence on campus. The Times of India report added that unemployement was cited as a reason for the suicide by the student leaders. In the gathering of thousands of youth and students, condolences to Murali were paid. However, students claimed there was another note in which Murli had expressed disappointment over not getting a government job as promised by the TRS government and alleged that the police took away that note from his room. Arunank, a member of Democratic Students Union in the campus alleged that the Telangana Government has been neglecting the development of the University resulting in degrading conditions of education in the University.

Students demanded the release of their fellow students who were detained on Sunday, after they prevented the police from taking away Murali's body. Security was tightened on the campus even as students raised slogans against the chief minister.

Rai told ANI that the state government was responsible for Murali's suicide.
