Phil Fulmer's search for next Vols head coach drawing to a close

Phil Fulmer's search for next Vols head coach drawing to a close

Several reports have indicated that Jeremy Pruitt is the third SEC defensive coordinator to become a candidate for the Tennessee job. Tucker, now Georgia's DC, coached under Saban in 2015 before following Kirby Smart to Athens. That work has made Tucker a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, given to college football's top assistant coach.

Steele has had similar success with the Tigers and also is in his second season with Auburn. He was the head coach at Baylor from 1999 to 2002, where he compiled a 9-36 record.

Jeremy Pruitt is now serving as the defensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban, while he's only been in that positon since 2016 it's not his first stint with the Crimson Tide. He was initially there from 2007-12, the last three seasons as defensive backs coach.

Tennessee's looking for its replacement to Butch Jones, who replaced Derek Dooley, another former Saban assistant.

Pruitt, an Alabama alum, has served as the Crimson Tide's defensive coordinator during the past two seasons after having previously held the same position at Georgia (2014-15) and Florida State (2013), where he helped lead the Seminoles to a national championship. The latter two have already had two interviews with new Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer, per ESPN's Chris Low.

Tennessee is still searching for its next head coach, despite schools like Florida State and UCF making their hires within a matter of days.

Georgia will play No. 2 Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual on New Year's Day.
