Airtel, Intex team up to offer bundled 4G smartphones

Companies in the telecom sector have become more aggressive in the bundled offerings segment after Reliance Jio in July announced an "effectively free" 4G phone for a refundable security deposit of Rs1,500 and unlimited data for Rs153 a month.

Under the Airtel-Intex partnership, a customer can buy a new Intex Aqua LIONS N1 for an effective price of Rs1,649 against the current market price of Rs3,799.

Customers will need to make a down payment of Rs 3,149 for the handset, followed by 36 monthly recharges of Rs 169.

After 18 months, you will get a refund of Rs. 500 and another Rs. 1,000 after the next 18 months.

The Intex Aqua Lions N1 is powered by 1.1GHz MediaTek processor and it comes with 1GB of RAM. It has 4-inch screen, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 128GB) and 2MP rear and VGA front camera.

Ajai Puri, Chief Operating Officer (India and South Asia), Bharti Airtel said, "We are really pleased to see the continued positive response to our "Mera Pehla Smartphone" initiative from customers as well as smartphone manufacturers".

According to commentators, this comes as Bharti's third tie up with a domestic handset maker under its strategy to encourage 2G subscribers to opt for entry-level 4G smartphones.

Earlier, Airtel has partnered with Celkon and Karbonn for launching similar low-priced 4G phones.

Customers need to make a down payment of Rs. 3149 for the Aqua LIONS N1. It houses a 2450mAh battery and is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core Processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage.

Aqua LIONS N1 sports a 2-megapixel rear camera and 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Airtel is offering the phone at an effective price of Rs 1,649. Airtel offers Rs 1500 cashback to its prepaid customers who purchase these handsets.

Interestingly, Airtel bundles a cashback scheme on these smartphones similar to Vodafone-Micromax partnership.

Alongside the Aqua Lions N1, Airtel also added two more smartphones- Aqua A4 and Aqua S3. It has a 2450 mAh battery plus 8MP primary camera and a 5MP front shooter with flash for taking great pictures. Users can access all apps on Google Play Store, including YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp on the devices. "We look forward to working with them towards empowering every Indian with a 4G smartphone". Airtel has launched the new devices under its "Mera Pehla Smartphone" initiative. All the three smartphones also come preloaded with the MyAirtel App, Airtel TV, and Wynk Music to offer a great self-serve and content experience to customers.

Airtel now offers total seven 4G smartphones under this initiative. It's worth noting that in order to get the full Rs 1,500 refund, the users will have to make a minimum recharge of Rs 6,000.
