Arsene Wenger hits back at Jose Mourinho over Lacazette jibe

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is refusing to concede defeat in the Premier League title race even though his team are now 15 points adrift of Manchester City in top spot.

He then added: "I can make a surprise tomorrow and the one that is unavailable, he plays".

France striker Lacazette was ruled out of Saturday's game by Wenger on account of a groin injury, only to recover, start and get on the scoresheet.

"The truth is Eric Bailly, no chance for the weekend, Phil Jones a chance, [Marouane] Fellaini a chance, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] a big chance and [Nemanja] Matic is injured but will play for sure".

"I'm always honest. I thought really that he wouldn't play, that's what I had been told".

When Wenger was quizzed on his comments, he fired back at Mourinho and asked whether he expected him to "leave him [Lacazette] at home". Manchester United came to Emirates Stadium with fury and scored quickly two goals into the first minutes of the game. Wenger said on Wednesday.

"After, he had a test on Friday morning and went to the game".

Even though progression into the last 32 has been assured, the Frenchman still intends to play those on the fringes of the first team, rather than blood a team of youngsters.

"I am not Pochettino, I am Arsene Wenger", the Frenchman told United Kingdom newspapers.

"If I am a player, and I think with what we produced, we have a huge potential, and we lose the game, we can not accept that".

"That's why it's important in these rounds that we give some young players experience".

Wenger remains hopeful the Germany worldwide could yet return to the side at Southampton on Sunday after suffering a thigh injury at the weekend.

"For your balance it's not bad but for a footballer I don't think it's great".

"You can do ice skating by bringing your child on and just making sure nothing happens to him, or (you can do) ice skating violently, I don't think he did that".
