Iraq demands U.S. backtrack on Jerusalem, summons ambassador

Yesterday, US President, Donald trump is recognized as the capital of Israel is Jerusalem, not tel Aviv.

On Wednesday, Trump announced his decision - despite widespread global opposition - to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the USA embassy to the flashpoint city. "We caution against the unsafe repercussions of this decision on the stability of the region and the world", a government statement reads.

"With today's decision, my Administration reaffirms its longstanding commitment to building a future of peace and security in the Middle East", Pres. Trump said.

"The US administration has to backtrack on this decision to stop any risky escalation that would fuel extremism and create conditions favorable to terrorism", it said.

There are more than 5,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, part of an global coalition providing air and ground support in Iraqi forces' fight against Islamic State militants. It has more than 5,000 troops in Iraq.

It fights under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), a mostly Iranian-backed coalition of Shia militias that played a role in the battle against IS.

Turkey, a US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, threatened to sever ties with Israel if the USA were to make such a declaration and the Palestinians said they would cut off contact with their USA government liaisons, CBS News reported.

Trump's move to end decades of careful United States policy has sparked a storm of condemnation around the globe, both from Washington's traditional allies and its global foes. The president admitted the move will cause dissent, but says it could help resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Protest and skirmishes erupted on Thursday in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip where the Palestinian Authority has called for general strikes.

Palestinian have demanded that part of Jerusalem be set aside as their capital and the global community has traditionally view Tel Aviv as the capital of Israel.
