North Korea Implies War Is Inevitable After US-South Korean Military Exercise

China, North Korea's neighbour and lone major ally, has again urged calm and says war is not the answer as Pyongyang said military drills involving the United States and South Korean forces made war "an established fact".

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen markedly in recent months after North Korea's latest missile and nuclear tests, conducted in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions and worldwide condemnation.

The supersonic jet departed from its base in the USA territory of Guam before joining two Japanese F-15 fighters and then took part in military drills on the Korean Peninsula along with Americans and South Korean fighter jets, Bloomberg reported.

"We do not wish for a war but shall not hide from it", the regime added.

"Through the drill, the South Korean and USA air forces displayed the allies" strong intent and ability to punish North Korea when threatened by nuclear weapons and missiles, ' the South Korean military said in a statement.

"Series of violent war remarks coming from the USA high-level politicians amid such circumstances have made an outbreak of war on the Korean peninsula an established fact", the spokesperson said. "The ones that will suffer the most are ordinary people", said Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang in a statement.

Meanwhile Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said North Korea wants direct talks with the United States to seek guarantees on its security, something Moscow was ready to facilitate. "We are ready to support that, we are ready to take part in facilitating such negotiations", Lavrov reportedly said.

"The overall scale of forces helps contribute to a realistic site picture for those participating, especially with regard to air assets integrating in a war-time scenario with their support personnel and equipment", the US military said.

In September, B-1Bs were among a formation of US military aircraft that flew further north up North Korea's coast than at any time in the past 17 years, according to the US Pacific Command.

The F-22 Raptor is capable of striking major facilities in the North without detection.

Both sides insist they don't want war, while saying they will act to defend themselves.

An article in North Korea's ruling party's mouthpiece Rodong Sinmun on Tuesday accused the US of trying to provoke a second Korean war and planning a pre-emptive strike. Feltman met North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong Ho on Thursday, North Korea's official KCNA news agency said.
