Rep. Trent Franks is resigning from Congress

Roll Call is reporting that Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) will step down from his seat in the near future.

Leaving the House floor Thursday, Franks did not confirm or deny those plans, telling reporters he would put out a statement later in the day. "And if this turns out to be true, there won't be that many people who are surprised".

"Half of all black children are aborted", Franks infamously said in 2010. "The statement will explain".

Franks, a self-described Reagan Republican, was first elected in 2002 and had mulled a 2012 Senate run before changing his mind.

Franks was spotted on the House floor during votes Thursday night, speaking with fellow Arizona Republicans Andy Biggs and David Schweikert.

Representing a solidly-Republican swath of Arizona, north of Phoenix, Franks built a reputation as a hard-line conservative since joining Congress in 2003. It did not elaborate why Franks has chosen to resign.

Frank's 8th District in Arizona backed President Donald Trump by 21 points in 2016. "The special general election is required to be held no less than 50 and no more than 60 days after the primary".
