The attempted attack also come five weeks after the Israeli military destroyed an attack tunnel belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, which crossed into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Palestinians and Israeli troops had skirmished at the border earlier in the day.

Israel's army launched strikes on two locations inside the Gaza Strip on Thursday, according to Israeli media reports.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for all activity happening in the Gaza Strip. A third rocket reportedly did reach Israeli territory, but landed in an open area and caused no harm or damage.

Demonstrators in cities including Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah rallied against Trump's shift in policy, some burning American flags and photos of the US president.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh addressed Palestinians and the Arab world in a televised speech on Thursday morning, saying that "Jerusalem is our honor".

United States President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday during a televised speech from the White House.

He added that armed resistance factions in Palestine have received clear orders to be ready to counter this strategic threat, which endangers occupied Jerusalem and its future.

Clashes were also reported throughout Judea and Samaria as Palestinians rioted following United States President Donald Trump's declaration Wednesday night that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
