Brian Ortega Doubles Up on UFC Fight Night 123 Post-Fight Bonuses

Ortega had been considered a dark horse in the division after racking up several wins in a row inside the Octagon, including four consecutive third round finishes.

As the fight got underway, Swanson was quick on his feet in the opening round, throwing punches in bunches trying to keep Ortega on his toes. Swanson was lucky that there was so little time remaining and he survived the round - just. Swanson attacks Ortega with some rights before blocking a high kick, Ortega grabs Swanson and he holds him against the cage wall.

Swanson's aggression didn't slow down in the second round but Ortega was calm, cool and collected while playing defense on the feet and then countering by inching closer and closer to get the clinch to show off his world class grappling skills. Ortega locked in the guillotine choke from a standing position and re-adjusted his grip to lock up the submission and force Swanson to tap.

"This is a big moment", Ortega said.

The bout is a pivotal one for Swanson, as a victory, could lead to a title shot for the 34 year-old. This throws a good amount of uncertainty in the air, but I also think when you have this many "Live Dogs" on a card, that it expands the number of lineup combinations that you can play with, and you can get pretty creative. "I'm going to go back, look at the tape and get better and climb the ranks".

One has to feel for Swanson, who was so close to a title shot before this setback and could easily have gotten the call from the UFC to face champion Max Holloway on short notice at UFC 218 last weekend after Frankie Edgar pulled out of the title fight with an injury.
