Lasith Malinga not picked in Sri Lanka squad for India T20 series

Bhubaneswar: Countdown for the upcoming T20 global match between India and Sri Lanka scheduled at Barabati Stadium in the Millennium city on December 20 has begun. Veteran fast bowler Lasith Malinga as well as seamer Suranga Lakmal have been left out of the 15-member contingent for various reasons.

The batting fortunes will rest primarily on the shoulders of the experienced duo of Upul Tharanga and Angelo Mathews. All-rounder Dasun Shanaka and fast bowler Vishwa Fernando have been brought in for the T20I series.

Malinga's previous appearance for Sri Lanka in any format came in the one-off T20I against India at Colombo during September.

Malinga recently took part in the Bangladesh Premier League but left midway without stating any reason.

Malinga, who has also not been included in the ongoing ODI series against India, has been struggling with his global form since returning from ankle surgery in 2015.

His returns in ODI cricket, however, have been disappointing with only 10 wickets in 13 games at an average of 62. The seam-heavy squad features only one specialist spinner in the form of Akila Dananjaya. India and Sri Lanka are now involved in a three-match ODI series which is equaled at 1-1.

The T20I series gets underway on December 20 in Cuttack.

The first match of the series will be played at Cuttack on December 20 which will be followed by matches in Indore and Mumbai on December 22 and 24 respectively.
