Interpol rejects India's request to issue red corner notice against Zakir Naik

The Interpol report had taken cancelled Red corner notice on Dr. Zakir Naik citing lack of evidence.

The sources said Interpol's decision might create problems in getting Naik extradited from Malaysia, where he has been given permanent residency. Zakir Naik has been residing out of India since July 1, 2016, and has offered investigative agencies to question him through Skype or digital means, but agencies have been pushing Naik to come to India. However, the news of this came late because Interpol informed Naik's legal firm Corker Binning, based in London, UK only on December 11. But I would have been much more relieved if my own Indian government and Indian agencies, they gave me justice and cleared me of all the false charges.

"The commission further pointed that the information published by the Ministry of External Affairs on its guidelines for extradition appears different from that provided by the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Interpol of India, concerning the requirement to include charge sheet for extradition".

NIA, however, was quick to clarify on Saturday that the ground was merely a "technical" one, as the chargesheet was filed subsequently on October 26, 2017, "a fact that Interpol did not take cognisance of".

Naik is accused of spreading hatred through his provocative speeches, funding terrorists and laundering several crores of rupees over the years. It has also named IRF and the company Harmony Media Limited promoted by Naik. Interpol contended, "There was a severe lack of evidentiary basis, a failure by Indian authorities to follow due process of law, political and religious bias that formed the basis of such a notice, and lack of global interest". The government has also banned Naik's Islamic Research Foundation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

According to experts, cancellation of red corner notice against Naik may lead to problems in the extradition process of Naik. "The request for RCN against Zakir Naik was not accepted by Interpol as charge sheet had not been filed when the request was submitted to the Interpol Headquarters", said sources in NIA. "We are sure Interpol will issue RCN this time", a home ministry official said.
