Oklahoma's Trae Young Ties NCAA Record With 22 Assists

The basket wasn't initially credited as an assist but still drew a gasp from the crowd at Lloyd Noble Center in the midst of the No. 17 Sooners' 105-68 win over Northwestern State on Tuesday night. The freshman guard, who since his high school days has been liberally compared to Stephen Curry by scouts, entered the evening leading the nation in scoring (28.9 ppg) and ranked third in assists (8.9 apg).

Trae Young has been one of the most impressive players in all of college basketball as a true freshman this season.

"That's what I want it to be", Young said.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (8-1): Junior guard Christian James (12.8 points, 4.4 rebounds) has been a consistent sort while averaging 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over his last three games.

Northwestern State kept the game close for about 4 minutes and led 11-9 on a layup by Owens at the 16:07 mark of the first half.

Young set the tone in the first 40 seconds of the game, hitting Manek on a lob for the first of his 13 first-half assists. "People may say that can't be done, but you've got to do the best you can possibly do, and we didn't do well at it", said Demons' coach Mike McConathy. He made a lot of good plays for a lot of guys as well. "Basketball people talked about how Magic Johnson knew where the other nine players on the floor where, well Trae knows that too". It's ridiculous. We've got one more game tomorrow night (before Southland Conference play begins December 28 at Nicholls) to hopefully look like we have at times in the past month.

Kruger recorded his 610th career win, moving him past former Oklahoma coach Billy Tubbs (609) on the all-time Division I coaching wins list.

Oklahoma sophomore forward Kristian Doolittle made his first appearance of the season just past the midway point of the first half after serving an academic suspension from the school in the first semester.
