Doctor charged with having wife killed to protect drug ring

The new charges come more than five years after Dr. Kauffman's wife, April Kauffman, a New Jersey radio host, was found shot to death inside their Linwood home.

Kaufman and Augello then allegedly hired a man named Francis Mulholland to kill April, after April threatened to divorce her husband and expose his illegal enterprise. Another six people connected to the gang were charged in the drug ring.

The Atlantic County prosecutor's office said that it believes Kauffman's killing resulted after divorce discussions took a bitter turn.

While James Kauffman, 68, remained behind bars just down the street, a crowd gathered inside the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Tuesday afternoon to hear Tyner announce that Kauffman had ordered his wife killed to protect his illegal drug business. One more twist: Augello also is charged with conspiring to try to kill James Kauffman.

With his self-described "financial empire" in jeopardy, James Kauffman and Augello began propositioning several people to murder April Kauffman, according to Tyner.

Kauffman and Augello knew each other prior to 2011, and the scheme carried on until authorities searched Kauffman's office and residences in June 2017, authorities said.

Mulholland died of a drug overdose in 2013, authorities said.

She allegedly found out her husband was running a prescription drug dealing operation with the aid of the Pagans and threatened to expose him if Kauffman did not agree to a divorce, reports the New York Post. James Kauffman faces murder and other charges in the shooting death of April Kauffman.

Prosecutors believe Mulholland, who is cousins with alleged Pagan associate and enterprise member Joseph Mulholland, was given a gun and a ride to the Kauffman home in the early morning hours of May 10, 2012.

April was found murdered in the Linwood home she shared with Dr. James Kauffman, 69, in May 2012.

Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office investigators as well as Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and local police officers searched his home and office that day.

Pack was 29 when her mother was killed.

"I have been waiting patiently for justice, and today I was lucky enough to be granted justice", Pack said. (Vernon Ogrodnek/The Press of Atlantic City via AP) Kim Pack, daughter of murder victim April Kauffman, talks to the media at her attorney's office in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, after her stepfather, Dr. James Kauffman, was charged in the murder, Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018. Francis Mullholland has stated that he received approximately $20,000 in cash for his role, though this number has been speculated at being higher, said authorities. "I think for the first time, today I can actually breathe". Her body was discovered by a handyman who cared for pet birds in the couple's home in the suburb of Atlantic City.

Last June, police and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents launched a raid on Kauffman's home and medical practice.

"He brandished a weapon, a 9mm Ruger handgun and at that time it was necessary for us to bring in a hostage negotiator", said Tyner.
