Hands On With the Vivo Phone's In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

The new version of the in-display fingerprint scanning technology developed by Vivo, along with Qualcomm is an optic-based technology which was developed with Synaptics.

During the time we got to spend trying out the phone in Las Vegas, the on-display optical sensor, which is snugly fitted between the printed circuit board and OLED panel, only failed the device unlocking process a couple of times. The whole setup also uses the built-in accelerometer in the phone and other sensors to know when to activate the fingerprint reader and light up the appropriate part of the display.

Like many other smartphones, the fingerprint scanner is always waiting to detect a fingerprint when screen is off.

According to statistics from global consultancy Canalys, smartphone vendors shipped 22 million full-screen smartphones worldwide in the second quarter in 2017, up from 700,000 in the first quarter of this year.

"With our efforts in extensive consumer research and long-term R&D investment, Vivo is well positioned to pioneer the development of fingerprint scanning technology". But sadly none of the big smartphone manufacturers were able to implement this feature in their flagship phones. "We are very excited to make it available to consumers soon".

Well, Chinese manufacturers showed a prototype of an in-screen fingerprint sensor even before the iPhone was out, but it was slow and not really where it needed to be to hit the markets. This 6-inch phone has the minimal bezels of something like the OnePlus 5T, but it also happens to unlock when I put my finger at the bottom of its screen. When fingerprint recognition is not required, the UI will be invisible and will not disrupt the overall visual experience. The company says that the technology offers a more convenient way of unlocking your handset.

Yes, Vivo is the first phone, which was made available in the market with this new technology, however, it is just the beginning, and we are waiting to see new and more advanced technology this year. The image of your print goes on to make its way to an optical image sensor that is present beneath the display. The active engagements of these companies indicate in-display fingerprint sensing will bring about a new trend for smartphones. The availability of Vivo's first in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone will be announced in early 2018.
