Mamata Banerjee receives D.Litt, says her life is full of negligences

On Tuesday the petitionners' lawyer Shamim Ahmed "We filed the PIL to challenge the CU's step on multiple reasons about her ineligibility".

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday was given a honorary D.Litt degree by Calcutta University even when the Calcutta High Court is hearing whether to accept a suit by a former educationalist challenging the decision of the university senate to confer the honorary degree to her.

Calcutta University has planned to confer D.Litt. on Mamata Banerjee.

"When you (Calcutta University) have chose to confer the title upon me, people are opposing it". The chief minister has also consented to receive the honour during the varsity's annual convocation.

The degree was presented by West Bengal Governor and Chancellor of the University Keshari Nath Tripathi at a ceremony at the Nazrul Manch in the metropolis.

He reasoned that those who have chose to confer the honour to the chief minister are the CU senate members who are appointed by the state government which is headed by Ms Banerjee as its chief minister.

"No national newspaper is now being allowed to write certain news reports and subjected to strong arm tactics", she said without elaborating.

Banerjee said, "I can assure you that I will keep this honour on a high pedestal till my last days..."

The CU has announced that it will bestow the honorary D.Litt on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief, an alumnus, for her contribution to social service at its convocation on January 11.

His counsel, Bikas Bhattacharya had yesterday submitted that the issues relating to the university and education itself were of public interest and as such the petition was justified to be a PIL.
